Answering The Popular Pizza War: Why Pineapple Belongs On Pizza

The world is divided not just over politics but also if you whether or not believe that pineapple should be eaten on top of a pizza. To burst or to support your bubble, I will say that I am a big fan of eating Hawaiian Pizza โ€“ so yes, personally, I truly believe that pineapple belongs on pizza. And I am not writing this to piss off my friends or other people cheering from the other team but I am writing this to raise awareness on why we should be leaving people to enjoy the things they like for chrissakes โ€“ because life is too short to pretend that you don’t like to eat something just because social media tells you so. At least hopefully not.

Even though that food is universal, there are just some choices that sparked truly contentious debates: should chili have beans? Does ketchup belong on a hotdog? How crispy should bacon be? Should you eat mac and cheese with a fork or spoon? Is pop-tart a ravioli? AND TRUST ME, MANY MORE.

A random photo from Facebook newsfeed that will most likely show up at 3 in the morning.

But nothing in this world has sustained the hate like the famous Hawaiian pizza. Topping the pizza with fruit has become a hot topic between people who eats pizza across the world. I’ve seen this debate skyrocketed on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and on between hangouts with my own friends. But when did it all start?

WHO INVENTED HAWAIIAN PIZZA?

It’s no other than Sam Panopoulos, a Greek who moved to Canada when he was around 20 years old. History tells that he just decided to try out pineapple on pizza in 1962 to attract customers to one of his restaurants in Ontario. He said that he and his brothers actually did enjoy the contrast between pineapple’s sweetness and the savory kick of the ham on top of the pizza. They named it Hawaiian after the brand of canned pineapple used on the pie. And then the rest is history.

PEOPLE WHO DOESN’T LIKE PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA

My friends and people who hate pineapple on pizza’s reason why they don’t like it is this: “you cannot put fruits on pizzas.”

That’s it. Plain and simple.

Well, apart from many, that argument is just always sitting on top of all the hostility out there. The president of Iceland, Jimmy Kimmel, and even Gordon Ramsey himself says “You don’t put . . . pineapple on pizza.”

They clearly do not like the taste. They find it too juicy and they’d rather want to stick with the classic pizza slices with pepperoni, mushroom, and bacon. They have more reasons but I will just leave it to them.

For me it’s all about preferences. It goes the same when I always end up choosing the boring vanilla over the decadent chocolate when picking an ice-cream flavor. It goes the same when I say I don’t like nuts in my chocolate bars, or how I hated raisins on macaroni salads. Sometimes I think why some people always like to brag and preach about what they like to the people who doesn’t share the same taste buds like them. I mean, right?

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m totally okay with people who are honest about how they feel about Hawaiian pizza. But I can’t help myself to judge them on how receptive they are about this topic. Some people are like oh-okay-type-of-person and others are just preachy ones who will arrogantly discuss in bullet form why you shouldn’t eat it just because they do not like it.

PEOPLE WHO LIKE PINEAPPLES ON PIZZA

BuzzFeed is correct when they mentioned that even if we’re not the most religious people, pizza, is a little slice of heaven on earth, isn’t it? A hot, perfect symphony of flavors and textures, delicately dancing across your tongue and down your gullet.

For #TeamPineappple, the first thing that you will hear is “because it taste so good.” That simple explanation is enough reason for them to enjoy this kind of pizza. But if we really want to dig deep, we like the balances of sweet and salty flavors that burst inside our mouths like fireworks in the sky on the 4th of July. When the sweetness of pineapple, savory flavor of the ham, tomato sauce, and cheese blends together, it is nothing but a match made in heaven.

Not to mention that pineapple, first hand, is a fruit loaded with nutrients. So again, why not?

CONCLUSION

So whether it is not clear to you, whether or not you’ll go with pineapple for your pizza, or wherever your loyalty lies, after all, it’s your mouth and appetite that will enjoy the slice of pizza in front of you on your table. And not just because you think it’s not right doesn’t mean it is entirely wrong. So eat with your mouth close and just enjoy the meal.

By the way, I asked my friends from Facebook & Instagram and 84% agrees regarding this matter and 16% said no. What do you think? Are you #TeamPineapple, #TeamNoPineapple, or #TeamEnjoyWhateverYouLike?

Italians and particularly Southern Italians would find pineapple on pizza rather insulting but pizza has long been an international thing and it is a good thing when cultures mix and give birth to new ways of topping traditional foods. I will soon reveal my revolutionary halo-halo secret recipe…..and, from a Filipino perspective, one can eat pretty much everything as long as there is “pampatunaw” available

I think Iโ€™ll say I like Hawaii in general as well โ€” except that itโ€™s expensive as hell! Haha but sure, Hawaiian pizza will always be my choice (especially if itโ€™s to cure a very bad hangover) ๐Ÿคฃ

Omg! All my life, I thought that the reason why it’s called Hawaiian pizza is because it originated in Hawaii. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Anyway, Hawaiian pizza is life! It’s in the middle of the night here, and I’m craving with all those photos! Huhu ๐Ÿ˜…

#TeamPineapple here! I like Greenwich’s version the best. I’ve had one at other places before where they used dehydrated pineapples. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ
